The winner, a regular lottery player, had initially bought the final ticket in a pack, which turned out to be a non-winner, and nearly chose not to continue playing.

Faced with the option of opening a new pack, the retiree hesitated, noting skepticism about whether the first ticket in a fresh roll could produce a winner. Instead of walking away, he decided to take the chance — a decision that resulted in a $50,000 third-tier prize.

The winner said he has had prior success playing the lottery, with a previous top prize of $2,500 on a Pick 4 game, but this marks his largest win to date.
