Montgomery county police target impaired commercial drivers in specialized traffic operation

GAITHERSBURG, MD — On August 22, 2024, the Montgomery County Department of Police conducted a specialized traffic operation focused on enhancing roadway safety by targeting impaired commercial drivers. The operation, funded by a grant from the Maryland Highway Safety Office (MHSO), was carried out in collaboration with the department’s Commercial Vehicle Unit, Alcohol Initiatives Unit, and officers certified as Drug Recognition Experts (DRE).

The operation brought together a team of officers with specialized training in commercial motor vehicle inspection and drug recognition. Over the course of the day, officers conducted 27 inspections and issued 98 violations, aiming to identify and remove impaired commercial drivers from Montgomery County’s roadways.

This initiative underscores the department’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all motorists by reducing the risk of accidents involving commercial vehicles, which, due to their size and weight, pose a significant threat when involved in collisions.

The operation is part of a pilot program, with the potential to be repeated based on the effectiveness and results observed. Montgomery County Police continue to prioritize commercial vehicle safety as part of their broader efforts to maintain safe roadways.
