An Arnold man stunned his wife with the winning ticket after scoring the game’s first top prize
ARNOLD, MD – A construction worker’s lunch break turned into a $50,000 payday after a $5 Maryland Lottery scratch-off revealed a top prize, sending the longtime player home early to hand the ticket to his wife and leaving the couple overcome with emotion.
The Anne Arundel County man, who lives in Arnold, purchased THE PRICE IS RIGHT scratch-off while getting lunch in late August.
He bought the ticket at the 7-Eleven located at 497 Jumpers Hole Road in Severna Park.
The player told Lottery officials he picked the game because it was new, having arrived at retailers on Aug. 21.
He scratched the ticket at the store and discovered he had won the $50,000 top prize.
A friend who saw the prize amount reacted loudly to the win, according to the Maryland Lottery.
Instead of heading directly back to his work site, the construction worker stopped at home and gave the winning ticket to his wife for safekeeping.
The news brought an emotional reaction from both of them, and those feelings remained when the couple arrived at Maryland Lottery headquarters on Sept. 9 to claim the prize.
The winner is no stranger to scratch-offs. He told Lottery officials he had previously collected several substantial prizes, including multiple wins exceeding $15,000.
The $50,000 ticket, however, was his largest described win and the first top prize claimed in THE PRICE IS RIGHT game.
The couple plans to use the money to replace furniture and appliances in their home, purchases they had not expected to make for several years.
Five additional $50,000 top prizes remained in circulation when the Lottery announced the win. Eight $5,000 second-tier prizes also remained.
The Severna Park 7-Eleven will receive a $500 retailer bonus for selling the $50,000-winning ticket.
