Myrtle Beach man arrested in Virginia after armed carjacking and police pursuit
Myrtle Beach, SC – A 21-year-old man is facing multiple charges in two states after allegedly stealing a vehicle at gunpoint in Myrtle Beach early Sunday morning, then fleeing to Virginia where he was arrested following a short police pursuit.
Just before 4 a.m. on Sunday, officers with the Myrtle Beach Police Department were dispatched to the 800 block of 4th Avenue North for a reported armed carjacking. As the investigation unfolded, the department’s Real Time Crime Center began tracking the stolen vehicle as it traveled southbound and exited city limits.
The vehicle was officially entered into law enforcement systems as stolen. Hours later, around 10:57 a.m., a Flock camera in James City County, Virginia, alerted local officers to the vehicle’s location on Route 199 eastbound.
James City County Police attempted a traffic stop at approximately 11:10 a.m., but the driver fled. Officers pursued the suspect briefly before taking him into custody just two minutes later at 11:12 a.m.
The driver was identified as Angel Gabriel Smith, 21, of Myrtle Beach. He was charged in Virginia with felony evading and eluding, unauthorized use of a vehicle, and driving with a suspended license. Smith is being held without bond at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.
He also faces a carjacking charge in Myrtle Beach and is awaiting extradition back to South Carolina.
