New Jersey Amtrack Employee Lied to Federal Agents During Assault Investigation

WASHINGTON, DC – Maurice Driver, a 35-year-old from Gloucester City, New Jersey, has pleaded guilty to making false statements to a federal agent, according to an announcement from U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Mike Waters, Special Agent in Charge of the Amtrak Office of Inspector General Eastern Area Field Office.

Driver was employed as a Lead Service Attendant in the café car of an Amtrak train traveling from Washington, D.C. to Chicago from January 3 to January 4, 2024. During the journey, Driver interacted with a passenger, whom he allowed to use a vacant sleeper car.

The passenger later accused Driver of sexual assault in the sleeper car, prompting an investigation by the Amtrak Office of Inspector General (OIG).

During the investigation, Driver misled the Amtrak-OIG special agent by denying that he provided his personal phone number to the passenger, communicated via text, or directed her to the sleeper car.

U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson has set the sentencing for November 6, 2024. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Rebecca G. Ross and Brian P. Kelly of the District of Columbia. The investigation involved the Amtrak OIG and the Amtrak Police Department.
