Soap legend Anthony Geary dies at 78

Anthony Geary, iconic ‘General Hospital’ star and eight-time Emmy winner, dies at 78

Amsterdam – Anthony Geary, the acclaimed actor best known for his groundbreaking role as Luke Spencer on General Hospital, died Saturday at age 78 from complications following planned surgery in Amsterdam, where he had lived in retirement since 2015.

Geary’s death marks the end of an era for fans of daytime television. A towering figure in soap opera history, Geary rose to fame for his portrayal of the complex antihero Luke Spencer, captivating audiences for decades and earning a record eight Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor.

Born Tony Dean Geary on May 29, 1947, in Coalville, Utah, Geary began his entertainment career on stage before moving to Los Angeles in the 1960s, taking odd jobs as he waited for his break. He made early appearances in shows such as All in the Family, The Mod Squad, and Marcus Welby, M.D., and entered the world of daytime drama in 1971 on NBC’s Bright Promise.

Geary joined General Hospital in 1978 after a failed audition for a different role. Instead, producers created the character of Luke Spencer specifically for him. Initially introduced as a short-term role, Luke quickly became central to the show’s most iconic storyline: the controversial relationship with Laura Webber, played by Genie Francis. Despite the character’s dark introduction — including a storyline involving sexual assault — Luke and Laura would go on to become soap opera’s most famous supercouple. Their 1981 wedding was watched by over 30 million viewers and included a cameo by Elizabeth Taylor.

Geary’s charisma, range, and commitment to portraying flawed, layered characters reshaped the genre’s leading man archetype. Over the years, he took breaks from the show but always returned, even portraying Luke’s look-alike cousin, Bill Eckert, in the early ’90s. When he finally left GH in 2015, he did so as one of the most decorated and celebrated figures in soap opera history.

In his later years, Geary lived in Amsterdam with his husband, Claudio Gama, enjoying a quieter life away from the spotlight. In a 2023 interview, he reflected on his career with gratitude, saying he felt proud of what he accomplished and was at peace with his decision to step away.

Geary is survived by Gama and leaves behind a legacy that transformed daytime television and inspired generations of performers and fans.
