New striped bass bonus reporting rule goes into effect today in New Jersey

SEASIDE PARK, NJ – In an effort to promote sustainable fishing practices and protect the striped bass population, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) has introduced new regulations and registration requirements for anglers targeting striped bass in state waters.

Under the revised guidelines, anglers are allowed to keep one striped bass measuring between 24 inches and less than 28 inches per permit. However, it is now mandatory for anglers to report any bonus harvest within 24 hours of catching the fish. This reporting requirement aims to improve data collection and enable better management of the striped bass population.

Moreover, as an incentive for anglers to report their harvest, those who submit a harvest report will become eligible for an additional permit. It’s important to note that permits issued in 2022 will not be valid for the current year, 2023. Therefore, all anglers must obtain a new permit for the current fishing season.

To apply for the Striped Bass Bonus Program permit and gain further information about the regulations, interested anglers are encouraged to visit the dedicated webpage on the NJDEP’s website. The webpage provides comprehensive details about the program, including application procedures, size limits, and reporting guidelines.

Additionally, the NJDEP reminds all saltwater anglers aged 16 and older to register for the free NJ Saltwater Recreational Registry Program before embarking on their fishing trips. Participation in this program is mandatory for all anglers targeting saltwater species in New Jersey. By registering, anglers contribute to the ongoing conservation efforts and help ensure the sustainable management of the state’s saltwater fisheries.

The NJDEP urges all anglers to familiarize themselves with the updated regulations and registration requirements before heading out to fish for striped bass.
