TRENTON, NJ – A historic win has occurred in New Jersey as a single Mega Millions ticket has clinched a staggering $1.13 billion jackpot, setting a record for the largest jackpot ever won in the state. James Carey, the Executive Director of New Jersey Lottery, confirmed the win from the drawing on Tuesday, March 26, making it the fifth largest in the Mega Millions history.
The winning ticket was sold at ShopRite Liquor #781 in Neptune Township, Monmouth County, with the retailer set to receive a $30,000 bonus for selling the lucky ticket. The jackpot’s cash value stands at $537.5 million. In light of the win, Carey urged the anonymous winner to secure the ticket and consult the Winner’s Guide on the NJLottery.com website for guidance on claiming the prize.
Furthermore, the lottery awarded 10 other New Jersey players with the third-tier prize of $10,000, and two additional winners doubled their prize to $20,000 through the Megaplier multiplier. The lucky numbers drawn were 07, 11, 22, 29, and 38, with the Gold Mega Ball being 04 and a Megaplier of 02.
This victory marks New Jersey’s 28th Mega Millions jackpot and follows a series of significant wins in the state’s history, including the previous record Mega Millions jackpot of $533 million in March 2018 and the largest Powerball jackpot of $429.6 million in May 2016.
New Jersey law permits lottery winners to remain anonymous, protecting their identities under the State’s Open Public Records Act. However, winners of $600 or more must identify themselves to lottery officials, albeit with certain protections and obligations regarding state and federal taxes and outstanding debts.
This is the first Mega Millions jackpot won in 2024, following 10 jackpots claimed in 2023. The next drawing is scheduled for Friday, March 29, with the jackpot resetting to $20 million. Mega Millions is available in 46 jurisdictions, encouraging responsible play and cooperation with the Council on Compulsive Gambling of NJ.
