Nj senate committee approves bill to honor bordentown's benjamin moore on i-295

The New Jersey Senate Transportation Committee has taken a significant step in honoring a local hero by advancing legislation to rename a section of Interstate 295. Proposed by Senator Troy Singleton, the bill seeks to designate the bridge over Crosswicks Creek in the Townships of Bordentown and Hamilton as the “Benjamin Moore & 693rd Sapper Company Memorial Highway.” This tribute recognizes the sacrifice of Army Specialist Benjamin G. Moore, a Bordentown native who lost his life in Afghanistan.

Senator Singleton (D-Burlington) highlighted Moore’s deep community ties and service, noting his roles as an EMT and firefighter in Bordentown City, Crosswicks, and Hamilton Township. Moore, affectionately known as the “Mayor of Bordentown,” was also involved with Westampton Township Emergency Services, Capital Health, and Trenton Emergency Services. He was honored posthumously with the title of “Honorary Chief” by Hope Hose Humane Company No.1 of Bordentown City.

A 2006 graduate of Bordentown Regional High School, Moore enlisted in the U.S. Army in April 2009. After training at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, he was stationed at Fort Drum, New York. While serving in Afghanistan with the 693rd Sapper Company, 7th Engineer Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, Specialist Moore was killed in action on January 12, 2011, in Ghazni Province at the age of 23.

Moore’s bravery and dedication to his country were recognized through numerous awards and decorations, including the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Combat Action Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Medal.
