A New York City police officer suffered a facial injury after being punched during postgame celebrations following the Knicks’ Game 2 victory, according to the Police Benevolent Association.
New York, N.Y. – A New York City police officer was injured while working crowd control outside Madison Square Garden during celebrations following the New York Knicks’ Game 2 win, according to the city’s largest police union.
The New York City Police Benevolent Association said the officer was punched in the face by an individual who allegedly breached a police barrier amid the large crowds gathered outside the arena.
Key Points
• A female NYPD officer suffered a facial injury during postgame celebrations outside Madison Square Garden.
• The suspect allegedly jumped over a barrier and punched the officer.
• The PBA says the suspect also bit another officer after being taken into custody.
In a statement released Friday, PBA President Patrick Hendry said the officer was attempting to maintain order and protect the public when the assault occurred.
“A victory celebration shouldn’t end with blood pouring down a police officer’s face,” Hendry said. “Our sister was just doing her job, trying to keep everyone safe in the pandemonium following the Knicks Game 2 win, when an individual jumped over a barrier and punched her in the face, hard enough to leave a bloody gash.”
According to the union, the officer sustained a significant facial injury during the incident.
Union says second officer was bitten
The PBA said the suspect continued to act violently after being arrested.
“The same person also bit another cop after being placed under arrest,” Hendry said.
The union did not release the suspect’s identity or provide additional details regarding criminal charges.
Officer recovering from injuries
Hendry said the injured officer is expected to recover but emphasized that assaults on law enforcement officers cannot be tolerated.
“Thankfully our sister is recovering, but this is completely unacceptable and cannot be tolerated,” Hendry said. “We will be in court to make sure this individual faces the consequences she deserves.”
Authorities have not yet released additional information regarding the incident or the status of the criminal case.
