High-speed crash kills driver after 120 mph collision in Wilmington
Wilmington, DE — A late-night crash involving a vehicle traveling at more than 120 mph ended in a fatal collision after a chain-reaction impact sent one car into a guardrail and another into a tree, state police said.
The crash occurred around 10:20 p.m. Thursday on Powder Mill Road near Alapocas Drive. According to Delaware State Police, a Saturn SC2 was traveling southbound when it was struck from behind by a Dodge Charger approaching at a high rate of speed.
The impact caused the Saturn to spin and crash into a guardrail. The Dodge continued forward, crossed into the northbound lanes, and struck a tree head-on.
The driver of the Dodge, a 26-year-old man from Wilmington, was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released pending notification of family.
The driver of the Saturn, a 27-year-old Wilmington man, was not injured.
The roadway was closed for an extended period as investigators processed the scene.
