Orlando, Florida — A Halloween celebration in downtown Orlando took a tragic turn early Friday morning when gunfire erupted, leaving two people dead and six others injured. Police received the first reports of gunshots near Orange Avenue and Central Blvd around 1:07 a.m., as crowds gathered for Halloween festivities. Just minutes later, a second shooting was reported south of Washington Street along the same avenue, according to a statement from the Orlando Police Department.
Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith confirmed the fatalities in a press conference, adding that the injured victims, who range from 19 to 39 years old, were taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center and are currently in stable condition. The victims’ names have not been released.
The suspect, identified as 17-year-old African American Jaylen Dwayne Edgar, was quickly apprehended. Chief Smith noted that Edgar has a prior arrest record, including a charge for grand theft in 2023, though further details about his motive or possible connections to the victims remain under investigation.
Halloween celebrations drew crowds estimated between 50,000 to 100,000 to downtown Orlando, prompting the deployment of nearly 100 police officers to manage the anticipated influx. Despite the increased police presence, the shooting still occurred, highlighting the challenges of maintaining safety in crowded public gatherings.
