Panel on Mental Health and Law Enforcement Conducted by Union County’s CIT

Absecon, NJ – The Union County Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) hosted Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Director of Community Outreach Shavonne Davis on Thursday for a panel discussion as part of their training program. The CIT program offers a 40-hour course for law enforcement, first responders, dispatchers, mental health professionals, and social service providers.

The training aims to enhance the response to individuals experiencing psychiatric crises by strengthening communication between first responders and mental health providers. Its curriculum includes mental health education and de-escalation skills. The program serves to improve the intersection of the law enforcement system and the mental health system.

During the training, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)-NJ facilitated a multicultural panel focusing on mental illness perspectives and law enforcement interactions within various cultures. Davis addressed the importance of mental health awareness among law enforcement. She also highlighted the necessity of engagement with the community to alleviate barriers and reduce stigma.

This event signifies the ongoing efforts to bridge the gap between law enforcement and mental health services, fostering better understanding and cooperation. Photos of the event are available on the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office’s social media platforms.
