Pittsburgh Fugitive Arrested After Attempt to Evade Capture in Hazelwood

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — A Pittsburgh man wanted for multiple offenses, including an assault in McKeesport, was taken into custody earlier today, the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office announced.

Ramone Thomas, 37, had been on the run for the past 30 days after failing to appear for a sentencing hearing on July 18, 2024. The hearing was related to a guilty plea Thomas had entered before Judge Caulfield on a charge of driving under the influence of a controlled substance.

In addition to the bench warrant issued for his failure to appear, Thomas was also wanted on three active warrants from the McKeesport Police Department. Two of these warrants involve charges of aggravated assault, including an incident outside the Midtown Plaza Apartments where the victim sustained a traumatic brain injury. The third warrant relates to terroristic threats made against the mother of his two children.

Detectives from the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office received a tip that Thomas was hiding at a residence in the Hazelwood neighborhood. Upon entering the residence, officers discovered Thomas attempting to evade capture by climbing out of a window and lying on the roof, wearing only a bath towel. He was ordered back inside, arrested without incident, and subsequently transported to the Allegheny County Jail.

Sheriff Kevin M. Kraus confirmed the arrest and noted the swift actions of the detectives in bringing Thomas into custody. Thomas will now face the charges against him, including the pending sentencing for the DUI and the additional warrants related to the assault and threats.
