Police Release Investigation Report of Deadly 2023 Crash

BALTIMORE, MD – The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General has released its comprehensive reports on a fatal crash involving police in Morningside, Prince George’s County, which occurred on August 13, 2023.

On that day, at about 1:40 PM, Prince George’s County Public Safety Communications was alerted about a black BMW allegedly involved in a shooting, following the caller and discharging firearms. Morningside Police Officer Stephen Huddleston subsequently located the vehicle on Suitland Road. The BMW, driven by Dashawn Redding, lost control as it neared the intersection with Allentown Road, colliding with a silver Ford Taurus in a turning lane.

The crash resulted in critical injuries for Rogelio Sanchez Gomez, the driver of the Ford Taurus, who succumbed to his injuries two days post-collision. The two juveniles in the Taurus sustained minor injuries and were later discharged from the hospital. A loaded handgun was found in the BMW, and Redding was arrested following a brief on-foot pursuit.

The IID submitted an interim report on September 26, 2023, and a supplemental report on January 23, 2024, after receiving the autopsy and crash report results, concluding the investigation. On June 7, 2024, the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office informed the IID that they would not pursue prosecution in this case. This decision marks the end of the legal process related to the tragic events of last August.
