RARITAN, N.J. – Mayor Nicolas Carra announced his immediate resignation Monday, ending his tenure as Raritan’s top elected official and concluding nearly ten years of public service to the borough.
In a letter addressed to residents and dated December 16, Carra said the decision came after deep reflection on his ability to advance the vision he set when first elected.
He wrote that leadership “requires collaboration and shared commitment,” and that without it, his goals for Raritan “cannot be realized in the way I believe it should.”
Carra, who previously served on the borough’s governing body before becoming mayor, said his original mission was to strengthen the local community, expand opportunities, and support small businesses. “I never sought office for the sake of a title; I ran to challenge the status quo,” he said in the letter.
While he did not provide specific reasons for his departure, Carra emphasized that his decision was not made lightly. He thanked residents, municipal staff, and volunteers for their support, calling them “true all-stars” whose dedication had inspired him.
“I believe it is right to allow someone else to take the helm in guiding our great town,” Carra wrote, pledging to continue supporting Raritan in other ways despite stepping down as mayor.
Carra’s resignation is effective immediately. The borough council is expected to meet soon to discuss the process for appointing or electing his successor.
