When you have to pretend you hate wealthy rich people because it’s your meal ticket from moving up from a New York City taco joint bartender to a $174,000 gig in Congress, complete with a swank D.C. apartment, problems will arise. Especially if that problem is that you want to attend a $30,000 per ticket event to rub elbows with the rich Hollywood elite you claim to despise.
That’s the problem young champagne socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez faced Monday night before heading to the annual Met Gala. So, AOC decided to wear a “Tax the Rich” dress to the event to make sure she maintains her skid row Brooklyn street cred while being able to party with the rich at the same time.
If you remember, “Tax the Rich” is the brand of protest wear launched by Cortez.
Of course, AOC was able to lib’splain her way out of her predicament.
“And before haters get wild flying off the handle, New York elected officials are routinely invited to and attend the Met due to our responsibilities in overseeing and supporting the city’s cultural institutions for the public. I was one of several in attendance in this evening,” she said.
A better protest for her might have been to show up dressed as one of her constituents that she represents. Perhaps a mugger on the subway, a street rapist, or maybe a homeless vagrant. That would have sent a much clearer message to protest for the plight of ‘her people’.
Another gesture could have been to take one of her down and out constituents as her plus one to show those mean rich people that she’s not one of them. The problem is, AOC yearns to be one of them…and she hates herself for it, but loves that she’s so close to being one of them.
It’s no wonder why so many are slamming her today for her choice. She could have simply said “no” to the invitation and stood outside with her supporters sporting “Tax the Rich Signs”. That’s what an organizer of the people would do. Instead, she graciously accepted the political comp and had a great night.
Meanwhile, outside the Gala, as AOC dined and wined with her friends, New York City Police clashed with Black Lives Matters members protesting the event. At least 10 were reportedly arrested.
It wasn’t just AOC that was confused and in a tough spot. Ella Emhoff, the stepdaughter of Vice President Kamala Harris literally dressed up as a giant menstruating private parts. No, really.
