Road rage erupts into shooting at busy Northwest DC intersection 

Investigators say a driver pulled out a handgun during a traffic dispute and opened fire

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A heated traffic dispute at a busy Northwest DC intersection turned violent when a driver allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot another motorist before fleeing the scene, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

The shooting happened Saturday at approximately 4:07 p.m. near the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Missouri Avenue Northwest.

Fourth District officers responded after receiving reports of gunfire tied to a road rage incident.

Investigators said the suspect exited his vehicle during the confrontation, produced a handgun, and shot the victim before driving away from the area.

DC Fire and EMS transported the victim to a local hospital with injuries described as serious but not life-threatening.

Police said officers immediately began canvassing the surrounding area and quickly located both the suspect and the vehicle nearby.

Authorities arrested the suspect without incident.

The Metropolitan Police Department identified the suspect as 58-year-old Lafonzo Leonard Williams of Northwest Washington.

Williams was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon involving a gun.

Investigators have not released additional details about what sparked the confrontation.

The investigation remains ongoing.
