San Diego Police Officer Charged in Federal Child Exploitation Case Involving Minors

A San Diego police officer is facing multiple federal child exploitation charges after a grand jury indictment was unsealed Friday, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California.

Federal prosecutors said 33-year-old Brandon McGibbon was charged with five counts involving alleged crimes against three minor victims.

According to court records, investigators allege that between Oct. 25 and Nov. 6, 2025, McGibbon engaged in the attempted receipt and production of child pornography and attempted to entice and coerce minors into sexual conduct and obscene activity.

The investigation was led by the FBI with cooperation from the San Diego Police Department.

Federal Authorities Detail Serious Charges

The indictment includes charges of:

  • Attempted receipt of child pornography
  • Attempted sexual exploitation of a minor
  • Attempted enticement of a minor

Federal prosecutors said the charges carry severe penalties if convicted, including mandatory minimum prison sentences ranging from five to 15 years and possible life sentences.

McGibbon is expected to make his initial appearance in federal court in San Diego on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.

Case Tied to Federal Special Victims Unit Effort

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said the case is part of ongoing efforts by its Special Victims Unit, which was formed in April 2025 to coordinate investigations involving child exploitation, sex trafficking, labor trafficking, and civil rights crimes.

The San Diego District Attorney’s Office also collaborated in the investigation, according to federal officials.
