Couple sentenced after twins suffer severe malnutrition

Bristol Township, PA

A couple has been sentenced for neglecting their newborn twins, leading to severe malnutrition. Courtney Soyka, 33, was sentenced to between 364 days and 729 days in jail after pleading guilty to two counts of child endangerment.

Marcus Maddela, 45, received a sentence of 8 to 23 months after also pleading guilty to similar charges. The twins were born two months premature in October.

Each child missed four crucial follow-up appointments after being released from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. When brought back to the hospital on December 11, the twins were found dangerously malnourished, falling below the first percentile for their age.

The twin that weighed 4.16 pounds at birth had gained only 1.62 pounds while the other gained 1.3 pounds. Following their readmission, they were transferred to St. Christopher’s Hospital and showed immediate improvement under medical care.

Doctors indicated that insufficient caloric intake at home was a primary cause of their malnourishment. The current status of the twins is unknown.

Mother charged in murder of 5-year-old daughter following extreme abuse allegations

Reno, NV A mother has been accused of participating in the severe abuse of her 5-year-old daughter, Izabella Loving, resulting in the child’s death. Andrea Loving was arraigned on a first-degree murder charge on Tuesday after her charge was upgraded from child abuse.

Izabella died in April from bacterial pneumonia, but the investigation revealed multiple blunt force injuries, malnutrition, dehydration, and medical neglect were also factors in her death. Court documents state that Andrea allowed the girl’s father, Nicholas Loving, to physically abuse and starve Izabella, claiming the mistreatment occurred “more times than she could count.”

The amended complaint details that Andrea and Nicholas engaged in “daily mistreatment” of Izabella, including confining her and limiting her food intake to minimal portions. During her interviews with detectives, Andrea reportedly acknowledged that Izabella was usually fed only a piece of bread each day.

Before Izabella’s death, Andrea conducted internet searches with alarming phrases such as “signs my child is dying,” and “my five-year-old is peeing blood.” Investigators discovered that the child was kept in a locked cubby structure that measured approximately five feet by five feet.

Text messages recovered from the Lovings’ phones indicated that Andrea frequently sought permission from Nicholas to feed Izabella, with most responses being negative. The couple supposedly locked their daughter in the cubby as a form of punishment for minor offenses like stealing food.

A detective from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office noted that Andrea expressed fear of Nicholas as the reason for her inaction regarding the abuse. In her statements, Andrea said she believed punishment would be inflicted on her if she intervened.

Andrea claimed responsibility for allowing the abuse to continue, admitting that she did not act to protect Izabella, even when she was aware of the violence inflicted on her. She described being aware of Nicholas kicking Izabella and insisted she was not physically abusive herself.

In the police statements, Andrea acknowledged that she should have sought medical help for Izabella, stating the child had been ill for over a week before finally attempting to take her to a doctor. The last known medical visit for Izabella occurred in October 2022.

Andrea expressed regret during her interviews, stating, “I should go to jail for not helping her and Nick should go to jail for killing her.” Both Andrea and Nicholas are scheduled for preliminary hearings on February 6, 2026.

Father and stepmother charged with starving children

Pontiac, MI A father and stepmother face serious allegations after their young children were hospitalized with severe malnutrition. Arturo Bazan-Perez and Dulce Crystal Bazan Castillo were arrested over the weekend and charged with multiple counts of child abuse and torture.

The charges stem from reports that a nine-year-old boy suffered cardiac arrest due to malnutrition and was admitted to Trinity Hospital. Weighing only 33 pounds upon arrival, he was in such critical condition that he required airlifting to another facility.

Doctors observed that the boy also exhibited signs of liver failure and various injuries consistent with abuse. His 11-year-old brother, also suffering severe malnutrition at 43 pounds, was brought to the same hospital.

The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office indicated that the boys had been removed from school in September, with claims of a family move. The children reported receiving less food than their younger siblings, who appeared healthy.

Reports suggest the boys’ windows were secured, preventing them from opening, and glass was painted over, restricting their view. Despite school officials possibly noticing issues when the boys searched for food in trash cans, the parents allegedly interfered by sewing their children’s pockets shut to prevent them from bringing food home.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard stated that enacting specific legislation could have potentially helped these children earlier. He criticized the current state of child protection in light of the outrageous abuse suffered by the victims.

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen D. McDonald described the situation as horrifying, expressing her thoughts for the children as they undergo recovery. As of Tuesday, both victims are reported to be in stable condition.

Bazan-Perez and Bazan Castillo are scheduled for a court hearing on December 4.

Father sentenced for starving daughter, leading to death

Midwest City, OK

A 38-year-old father was sentenced to 24 years in prison for the death of his 7-year-old daughter due to extreme abuse and starvation. Anthony Yonko pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of Violet Mitchell.

Oklahoma County District Judge Cindy H. Truong announced the sentence, which includes an additional six years of supervised release following his prison term.

Violet was brought to Saint Anthony’s Midwest Hospital on August 2 after her parents claimed she was unresponsive and needed medical attention. Medical personnel noted she showed signs of rigor mortis and severe malnourishment, weighing only 25 pounds at the time of her death.

Yonko and the victims had been living at the Vista Green apartments near Oklahoma City. Initial statements from Yonko revealed inconsistencies regarding the circumstances leading up to his daughter’s death.

He first claimed that the family had been feeding Violet crackers and soup for a flu-like illness and had not visited a doctor since she was much younger. During subsequent interviews, his account varied significantly regarding who was present in the apartment at the time.

A medical examination later determined that Violet had died from an intestinal blockage caused by a foreign object, with malnutrition being a contributing factor.

The victim’s mother, Lisa Mitchell, is scheduled to stand trial next month on charges of second-degree murder. Two relatives, David Yonko and Tiffany Mitchell, have already pleaded guilty and received 20-year sentences.

Statements from relatives indicated abusive practices, including claims that the victim’s mouth had been glued shut on multiple occasions.

This case underscores a tragic series of events that led to the unnecessary loss of life, raising serious questions about child welfare and protections within the family system.
