Seattle Man Arrested for Attacking Cops and Breaking Car Window at Delnaye Hall

A Washington state man was arrested after allegedly smashing vehicle windows during protests outside the Delaney Hall detention facility, while federal authorities reported a separate arrest involving an alleged assault on an HSI officer.

Newark, N.J. – Newark police arrested a Seattle man Friday during demonstrations outside the Delaney Hall immigration detention facility after he was allegedly observed damaging vehicles in the protest area, according to city officials.

The arrest came as Homeland Security Investigations reported a separate arrest involving an Arizona man accused of assaulting a federal officer during the ongoing protests.

Key Points

• Newark police arrested a 28-year-old Seattle man on criminal mischief charges.

• Authorities allege the suspect smashed vehicle windows during protests outside Delaney Hall.

• Homeland Security Investigations reported a separate arrest involving an alleged assault on a federal officer.

Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda Sr. identified the suspect as Zion Napier, 28, of Seattle, Washington. Authorities said Napier was taken into custody after officers observed him allegedly breaking vehicle windows in the protest area.

Napier has been charged with three counts of criminal mischief. Officials emphasized that the charges are accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Newark officials warn against violence

Miranda said city police remain committed to protecting the rights of individuals participating in lawful demonstrations while enforcing laws against criminal activity.

“Our Police commanders, supervisors, and officers are vigilant about safeguarding the rights of individuals to express their views during the protests at Delaney Hall,” Miranda said.

“However, no one has the right to come into our city, destroy personal property, or incite violence. Make no mistake. You will be swiftly arrested and face criminal charges. Think twice before coming to Newark with any other agenda than to protest peacefully.”

Federal authorities report separate arrest

Homeland Security Investigations also notified Newark police that federal agents arrested an Arizona man during Friday’s demonstrations.

According to Newark officials, the individual was taken into custody in connection with an alleged assault on an HSI officer. Federal authorities have not yet publicly identified the suspect or announced specific charges.

HSI said additional information regarding the suspect’s identity and the charges he faces is expected to be released at a later time.

Law enforcement agencies have maintained a significant presence around the facility as protests have continued in recent days. Officials have repeatedly stated that peaceful demonstrations are protected while warning that criminal conduct will result in enforcement action.
