SECAUCUS, N.J. — Officers Michael Borrelli and Austin C. Hawxhurst were recognized for their lifesaving efforts during a council meeting on Tuesday, following an incident on May 12, 2024.
At 8:49 p.m. on May 12, Secaucus Police responded to a call at Harmon Cove Towers regarding an unresponsive male who was not breathing. Upon arrival, Officer Michael Borrelli immediately began performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
Officer Austin C. Hawxhurst then prepared an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and delivered one shock to the victim.
Officers Borrelli and Hawxhurst continued CPR until Hudson Regional Hospital EMTs arrived. After a second shock was administered, the officers and EMTs persisted with CPR, eventually restoring the victim’s pulse and consciousness. The victim was subsequently transported to Hackensack University Medical Center by Hudson Regional Hospital EMTs and Jersey City Medical Center paramedics.
The victim remains in stable condition.
Chief Dennis Miller praised the officers and emergency medical personnel for their collaboration and dedication. “I am extremely proud of these officers and I commend their collaboration in performing these lifesaving measures and bringing this victim back to life,” Chief Miller said. “I also want to praise Hudson Regional Hospital EMS and Jersey City Medical Center’s Paramedics for their ongoing commitment to the safety of the residents of the Town of Secaucus.”
