Silver Spring man scratches his way to $50K top prize on new Maryland Lottery game

A Montgomery County player said his habit of buying newly released scratch-offs paid off with a $50,000 top prize.

SILVER SPRING, MD — A Silver Spring man’s routine of purchasing newly released scratch-off tickets turned into a $50,000 payday after he bought a winning ticket in the Maryland Lottery’s Multiply Your Money game.

The Montgomery County resident claimed his prize on Monday, July 13, after winning one of the game’s top prizes on the $5 Multiply Your Money Scratch-Off, which debuted on Tuesday, June 17.

The longtime Lottery player said he regularly plays bingo and scratch-offs and prefers buying new games when they are released.

After work, he stopped at KW Beer & Wine at 8513 Piney Branch Road in Silver Spring to pick up a few items. Before leaving, he purchased a Multiply Your Money ticket and scratched it inside the store.

After revealing a winning ticket, he asked the store owner to scan it for verification. The scan confirmed the ticket was worth $50,000.

The winner said he immediately went home to share the news with his wife and children.

According to the Maryland Lottery, he plans to use part of the prize to help people in need and put a down payment on a home for his family. He also said he intends to continue playing the Lottery.

KW Beer & Wine will receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the top-prize-winning ticket.
