Soda Pop Shop sells big winner in Glen Burnie

Glen Burnie carpenter wins $50,000 on Mega Money scratch-off ticket

GLEN BURNIE, MD — A routine stop at a local convenience store turned into a five-figure payday for a Glen Burnie carpenter who scratched his way to a $50,000 prize on a Maryland Lottery Mega Money ticket — with all 40 spots on the ticket hitting.

The winner, who nicknamed himself “Mega Money Mike,” purchased the $30 ticket at Soda Pop Shop, located at 337 Hospital Drive in Glen Burnie. He scratched it in-store and quickly noticed that every number on the ticket was a winner. Unsure of the exact total, he handed the ticket to the clerk to be scanned — and was stunned to learn he had won $50,000.

When he arrived home, Mike’s upbeat mood tipped off his wife of 38 years that something big had happened. After hugging their daughter, he revealed the winning ticket. His wife said she spotted a few $5,000 amounts and asked, “How many zeroes is that?”

The couple visited Maryland Lottery headquarters on January 20 to claim the prize. With her birthday approaching, they plan to take a vacation together to celebrate. They have not yet made further plans for the rest of the winnings.

The Mega Money scratch-off ticket offers a top prize of $2 million. According to the Maryland Lottery, four of those top prizes remain unclaimed. Mike’s $50,000 win was the fourth of that prize level to be claimed, leaving four more $50,000 prizes still in circulation.
