Somerset County launches free veterans shuttle to Lyons VA Medical Center

Somerset County, NJ – Local officials announced the launch of a fare-free shuttle service connecting the Lyons Train Station to the Lyons VA Medical Center in Bernards Township, aimed at improving transportation access for military veterans seeking medical care.

The new Veterans Lyons Shuttle began operating November 7 and has already served more than 50 riders, according to Somerset County officials.

The initiative is a collaboration between Somerset County, NJ TRANSIT, the Lyons VA Medical Center, and the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

Funded through an NJ TRANSIT grant and operated by Somerset County, the shuttle offers veterans a direct link between the regional rail network and the VA facility — closing what officials called a critical “first- and last-mile” gap in service.

Free weekday service for local veterans

The Veterans Lyons Shuttle runs Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., looping approximately eight times per day to coordinate with NJ TRANSIT’s Morris & Essex Line schedule.

Each vehicle seats 16 passengers and includes two wheelchair securement stations, ensuring full ADA accessibility.

County leaders are encouraging residents to spread the word among veterans in the region. “We are so pleased to be able to carry our veterans those last few miles,” officials said in a statement. “They’ve served us all so heroically — now we’re honored to serve them.”
