Gambrills, MD — A suspect in a stolen vehicle case was taken into custody Friday evening after crashing a stolen SUV during a failed getaway and attempting to flee on foot through a busy shopping area, Anne Arundel County Police said.

At approximately 7:30 p.m., officers from the Western District were alerted to a stolen 2020 Mazda CX-9 spotted behind the Crofton Cantina. When police attempted to approach, the vehicle sped off but quickly crashed into a median at Route 3 and Waugh Chapel Road.

The driver, later identified as 26-year-old Damonte J. Proctor of Gambrills, abandoned the disabled vehicle and fled on foot into the nearby Waugh Chapel Shopping Center.

With the assistance of K9 and police helicopter units, officers located and arrested Proctor without further incident. Authorities say he was also served with multiple outstanding warrants from both Anne Arundel County and other jurisdictions.

No injuries were reported during the pursuit or arrest. The investigation is ongoing.
