Sweeping Indictment Targets “1300” Gang in the Bronx for Series of Shootings

BRONX, N.Y. — Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark, along with NYPD Commissioner Edward A. Caban, has announced a significant legal action against 14 alleged members and associates of the “1300” gang. The group faces an 88-count indictment for their involvement in multiple shootings that endangered community members, including a 73-year-old woman and a teenage girl, among others.

The “1300” gang, named after a local street, is accused of carrying out six shootings around the Gun Hill area between April and September of 2022. The gang’s reckless actions during these incidents resulted in numerous innocent bystanders being wounded. One notable event was a drive-by shooting intended as a retaliatory attack against rival gang members, leading to unintended injuries to civilians.

In a highlighted incident, gunfire erupted during a crowded day at 3491 Baychester Avenue, and another shooting occurred at a candlelight vigil, demonstrating the gang’s blatant disregard for public safety. The gang is also tied to a violent robbery that left NYPD Officer Muhammed Chowdhury with severe injuries after an off-duty encounter.

Key defendants in the case, such as Isaac Garcia and Kyshawn Johnson, face additional charges in a separate 30-count indictment related to a school-related altercation that escalated into gunfire, injuring four more bystanders.

The Bronx DA’s office, under the direction of the Violent Criminal Enterprise Bureau, and the NYPD Criminal Enterprise Investigation Section have conducted a nearly two-year-long investigation into these activities. This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of local law enforcement to combating gang violence and ensuring justice for affected community members.

These indictments serve as a critical step in addressing the surge of gang-related violence in the Bronx and reflect the ongoing efforts to restore safety and security in the community.
