The accident happened around 12:22 a.m. when Branch, operating a 2004 Lexus RX300, was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I-495 near Edgemoor Road. The Lexus, reportedly at high speed, collided head-on with the oncoming Toyota in the left lane.

The Toyota driver was declared dead at the scene. Authorities are withholding the individual’s identity until family members have been notified.

Branch was taken to a local hospital for injuries incurred in the accident. Law enforcement officers noted signs of impairment during their investigation. Branch faces charges including Vehicular Homicide 2nd Degree, Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, Driving on the Wrong Side of the Roadway, and Failure to Have Required Insurance. During the stop, officers observed a corner knotted baggie on the passenger side floorboard, containing a substance appearing to be cocaine. The occupants were asked to exit the vehicle, and upon searching one of the passengers, identified as Tremayne Rigsbee, 47, additional baggies were found on his person.

Rigsbee was taken into custody and transported to the Utica Police Department. There, it was confirmed that the amount of narcotics found was at a felony level.
