A 16-year-old boy reported missing while swimming in the Potomac River was found dead Friday morning after an extensive multi-agency search.
Montgomery County, MD – A 16-year-old boy who disappeared while swimming in the Potomac River has been found dead following a large-scale search involving multiple emergency response agencies, Montgomery County Police announced.
According to police, officers from the Montgomery County Police Search Management Team, members of the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service Swift Water Rescue Team, and personnel from neighboring jurisdictions began searching the river around 6 a.m. Thursday after receiving reports that the teenager had gone missing while swimming near the 10800 block of MacArthur Boulevard.
The search continued into Friday morning before crews located the teen at approximately 9:30 a.m.
Body recovered Friday morning
Police said members of the Search Management Team and the Swift Water Rescue Team recovered the 16-year-old from the Potomac River Friday morning.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Medical examiner to determine cause of death
The teen’s body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the official cause and manner of death.
Authorities have not publicly released the victim’s identity. The investigation remains ongoing.
