Columbia, PA – A Columbia teenager is facing homicide charges after Lancaster County investigators say he fatally shot a 17-year-old while handling a firearm inside a borough residence earlier this month.
Jose Manuel Lopez III, 16, of the 200 block of Lawrence Street, was arrested Monday night and charged with third-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, possession of a firearm by a minor, and three counts of recklessly endangering another person in the death of Wilfredo Garcia, 17.
Investigation led to homicide charges
According to the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office, officers responded to a reported shooting at approximately 9:45 p.m. on July 18 at a residence in the 900 block of Plane Street. Garcia was found unresponsive inside the home, and despite officers’ attempts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said Lopez initially denied being in the room when the shooting occurred. During subsequent interviews, however, he admitted he was holding the handgun when it fired, according to charging documents.
Police allege Lopez told investigators he knew the firearm’s magazine was loaded when he pointed the gun at Garcia with his finger on the trigger. Garcia was struck in the head, and several other people were inside the room when the gun discharged, though no one else was injured.
Bail denied after arrest
Detectives interviewed multiple witnesses over more than a week as they investigated the shooting. Authorities also recovered two firearms during the investigation.
“As a minor Lopez is not allowed to possess a firearm,” investigators noted in the criminal complaint.
District Attorney Heather Adams called the case another devastating loss for the community.
“This incident was the second tragic loss of life that took place in Columbia within the span of two weeks,” Adams said. “We are all deeply disturbed by these violent incidents and commend Columbia Borough police and the Lancaster County Detectives for their diligent work on both of these cases.”
Lopez was arraigned Tuesday morning before Judge Miles Bixler, who denied bail. Under Pennsylvania law, defendants charged with homicide are not eligible for bail. Lopez remains in the Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center as the investigation continues.
The case underscores the deadly consequences of unsafe firearm handling, particularly involving juveniles. Prosecutors allege the shooting occurred after a loaded weapon was pointed at another person, a reminder of the risks associated with improper firearm possession and handling.
