GREENBELT, MD – A spike in check thefts from a public mailbox at Greenhill and Greendale Place has prompted the Greenbelt Police Department to issue a community warning. Officials said multiple reports have surfaced in recent days involving checks stolen directly from the box, raising concerns about a potential pattern of mail-related crimes in the area.
Police emphasized that stealing mail is a federal offense, punishable by up to five years in prison. The Greenbelt department confirmed that each incident is being referred to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, which handles mail theft investigations nationwide.
Authorities are urging residents to take precautions when sending payments, including mailing checks inside local post offices or using electronic payment methods whenever possible. Anyone with information or concerns is encouraged to contact the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 877-876-2455.
