Three charged in Super Bowl Sunday vehicular assault and shooting in Teaneck

TEANECK, NJ – Three men have been charged in connection with a vehicular assault and shooting that erupted on Super Bowl Sunday in a Bergen County neighborhood, authorities announced Thursday.

Deputy Chief Seth B. Kriegel said Byron Jones, Nyko Johnson and Jesus Nieves were arrested in connection with the Feb. 8 incident near Rensselaer Road and Tryon Avenue.

At approximately 4:17 p.m., multiple 911 calls reported shots fired in the area. Witnesses told officers they heard a motor vehicle crash followed by multiple gunshots.

One witness reported seeing a vehicle disabled on a snowbank near Rensselaer Road and Irene Court and observed a male fleeing the scene on foot. Another witness reported hearing several gunshots and seeing two males, one entering a dark-colored sedan and driving away, while the other ran from the area.

When officers arrived, the individuals and vehicle involved had already fled. A Bergen County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit conducted a search of the surrounding area but did not locate any suspects at that time.

During a canvass of the scene, officers recovered several 9mm shell casings in close proximity to the reported incident. The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Identification Crime Scene Unit processed the scene.

Later that evening, Johnson and Nieves responded to police headquarters and reported their involvement in the earlier incident. Authorities said Nieves had been driving a rented vehicle at the time.

Further details regarding specific charges were not immediately released.

The charges are accusations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
