Three sheds destroyed in accidental fire sparked by burn pit in Delmar

DELMAR, MD – Fire investigators say three sheds were destroyed Tuesday afternoon after embers from a burn pit reignited and spread on a property in Wicomico County.

The fire broke out around 2:43 p.m. at 32949 Roy West Road, where occupants had been using a burn pit earlier in the day.

When they left the residence, they believed the fire had been completely extinguished.

Upon returning, they discovered that flames had spread to nearby sheds, fueled by dry conditions and gusting winds.

Fire crews control blaze within 20 minutes

The Delmar Fire Department responded to the one-alarm blaze with 35 firefighters, who brought the fire under control in about 20 minutes.

No injuries were reported, and no residents were displaced.

Loss estimated at $225,000

Officials said the fire caused approximately $75,000 in structural damage and another $150,000 in lost contents.

The Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal determined the blaze was accidental, originating from the burn pit area.
