Swimming has been temporarily suspended at Island Beach State Park as thunderstorms move through the Jersey Shore, prompting officials to clear the water for visitor safety.
SEASIDE PARK, N.J. – All designated swimming areas at Island Beach State Park were temporarily closed Saturday as thunderstorms and lightning moved across the Jersey Shore.
Park officials announced the closure Saturday afternoon, citing unsafe conditions caused by thunder and lightning in the area.
Swimming suspended until conditions improve
Officials said all swimming areas would remain closed until it is safe for visitors to return to the water.
“Please be advised that all swimming areas are currently closed due to thunder/lightning. We will advise as to when we can safely reopen,” the park said in a public advisory.
The closure comes as severe thunderstorms moved across New Jersey under a National Weather Service Flood Watch, bringing heavy rain, frequent lightning, and the potential for damaging winds.
Visitors urged to monitor updates
Park officials said they will announce when lifeguarded swimming areas reopen once lightning has cleared the area and conditions are deemed safe.
Visitors are encouraged to monitor Island Beach State Park’s official social media channels for the latest updates before heading to the beach.
Why it matters
Lightning can strike several miles from a thunderstorm, making beaches and open water especially dangerous during severe weather. Safety officials advise visitors to leave the water immediately when thunder is heard and remain sheltered until conditions improve.
