WASHINGTON, D.C. — A tragic crash on Thursday evening sent a pickup truck off the Arlington Memorial Bridge and into the Potomac River, leaving one person dead and sparking an ongoing investigation.
The incident occurred on January 16, when the truck collided with another vehicle on the bridge. During the crash, the truck breached the bridge’s concrete railing and fell into the river, according to the DC Fire and EMS Department.
Rescue divers searched the water and located the truck’s occupant about 22 minutes later. The individual was pulled from the river with life-threatening injuries and transported to a hospital. On Friday morning, the United States Park Police confirmed the person had died. It is still unclear whether the victim was the driver or a passenger, and authorities are investigating the possibility that additional people were inside the truck.
Two people in the other vehicle involved in the crash remained on the bridge. One of them sustained minor injuries and was treated at a hospital.
The Arlington Memorial Bridge remains closed, and officials have not provided a timeline for its reopening as the investigation continues.
