Trump wins $25 million settlement in lawsuit over Facebook ban

SAN FRANCISCO — Meta Platforms, Inc. has agreed to pay former President Donald Trump $25 million to settle a lawsuit over his suspension from Facebook, resolving a long-running First Amendment dispute.

A notice of settlement was filed Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California by an attorney representing Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The filing confirmed that both parties had reached an agreement to settle Trump’s claims but did not disclose the terms.

On Thursday, The Associated Press reported the settlement amount, citing three sources familiar with the matter. According to the report, $22 million of the settlement will be allocated to funding Trump’s future presidential library, while the remaining amount will cover legal fees.

Trump was suspended from Facebook on Jan. 7, 2021, after posting messages praising his supporters following the attack on the U.S. Capitol. Facebook cited violations of its policies against inciting violence as the reason for the suspension.

Trump will use the money to pay legal fees. The balance of the payment will go to the Trump presidential library fund.
