40,000 baggies of suspected fentanyl found during turnpike traffic stop in Hempfield
HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP, PA — A routine traffic stop on the Pennsylvania Turnpike turned into a major drug bust after troopers discovered tens of thousands of suspected fentanyl baggies stashed inside a red bag.
The stop occurred along Interstate 76 near mile marker 89 on Wednesday, when Pennsylvania State Police pulled over a Honda H-RV headed westbound after observing multiple traffic violations. The driver, identified as Gerard Polanco-Peralta of New Jersey, was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
During the stop, troopers noted several signs of suspected criminal activity and requested permission to search the vehicle. Polanco-Peralta gave consent, and officers began a search of the interior.
Inside, they uncovered a red bag containing approximately 800 bricks — equivalent to 40,000 individual baggies — of suspected fentanyl. Authorities estimate the street value of the seized narcotics at more than $80,000.

Polanco-Peralta was taken into custody and is facing a range of drug-related charges. Bail was denied. The case remains active and ongoing, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
The bust highlights continued efforts by law enforcement to intercept the flow of illegal drugs across Pennsylvania highways. Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, has become a primary driver in overdose deaths statewide and nationally.
