FREEHOLD, NJ — Two fatal traffic incidents involving a pedestrian and a bicyclist in Monmouth County on Saturday evening are under active investigation, authorities said Sunday.
The first incident occurred at approximately 7:45 p.m. in Howell Township, where police responded to the intersection of U.S. Route 9 and Strickland Road. A 71-year-old male pedestrian from Howell was struck by a 2016 Honda CR-V driven by a 58-year-old Howell resident. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver remained on site to cooperate with authorities.
About an hour later, at approximately 9 p.m., West Long Branch police were dispatched to the intersection of State Route 36 and Monmouth Road for a report of a collision involving a bicycle.
A 55-year-old male bicyclist from Long Branch was struck by a 2018 Range Rover driven by an 18-year-old Tinton Falls resident. The bicyclist was transported to Monmouth Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The driver also remained at the scene.
Both incidents are being investigated by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, the Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team (SCART), and the respective local police departments.
