Police say multiple shooters exchanged gunfire after altercation on Atlantic Avenue.

Virginia Beach, Virginia — Eight people were shot during a late-night gunfight along the Oceanfront on Saturday, prompting a major response and an ongoing investigation by the Virginia Beach Police Department.

The shooting occurred around 9:50 p.m. in the 1400 block of Atlantic Avenue, where officers on patrol responded to reports of gunfire and a ShotSpotter activation. Responding officers located eight individuals suffering from gunshot wounds, all of whom were transported to local hospitals. Police said the victims’ injuries ranged from non-life-threatening to serious, but all are expected to survive.

Police identify suspects, make arrest

The Virginia Beach Police Department Homicide Unit determined the violence stemmed from an altercation between two unrelated groups of young adults and juveniles that escalated into an exchange of gunfire.

Detectives identified at least three individuals involved in the shooting. One of them, Jamaya Williams, 18, of Henrico County, was also shot and taken into custody. Police said Williams was in illegal possession of two firearms.

Williams is charged with seven counts each of aggravated assault, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and reckless handling of a firearm causing injury, along with three counts of violating a protective order.

Governor Abigail Spanberger has yet to make a public statement on the shooting on social media.

Additional suspects sought

Authorities have issued warrants for a second suspect, identified as Isaiah Charity, 18, of Richmond. He is wanted on eight counts each of aggravated malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and reckless handling of a firearm causing injury.

A third suspect remains unidentified and is described as a Black male wearing a dark-colored hoodie with possible red lettering on the back.

Victims and separate arrest

Police identified seven additional victims ranging in age from 17 to 24, from Virginia and Georgia.

During the investigation, officers also arrested Jahmari Savage, 21, of Chesapeake, who was found in illegal possession of a concealed 9mm handgun. Authorities said Savage is not believed to be connected to the shooting.

The Virginia Beach Police Department said the case remains active, with detectives working to locate the remaining suspects. Authorities are asking anyone with information or video footage to contact VBPD or submit tips anonymously through Crime Solvers.
