SEASIDE HEIGHTS, NJ – For years it was one of the most iconic structures in Seaside Heights—a rusted-out steel framed skeleton of a building that was never built. Eventually, the building at the corner of Hamilton and Webster Avenues was razed, and promises were made to build new 10-story mixed-use structures.
After promising construction would start last summer, it hasn’t. Once again, Seaside Heights officials are left asking developers what is going on?
This time, the consultant for the developer, SSH Boulevard LLC, is former borough attorney and GOP Chairman George Gilmore. Gilmore this week blamed the hold-up on the Murphy Administration and CAFRA permits.
This week, Seaside Heights Mayor Anthony Vaz gave SSH Boulevard LLC and Gilmore 30 days to provide an update. Vaz, who expected the project to start last year, wants to know, if not now when is construction starting?
“We are concerned,” Vaz said.
When completed, the building will be the tallest building on the barrier island, rivaling a 10-story tower being built in Toms River under the direction of Mayor Maurice “Mo” Hill.
Construction has not begun on the 10-story building, so if the project falls through with SSH Boulevard, LLC, the borough will not have to deal with another rusted hulk for another decade, for now anyway.
