Wildwood, NJ – The Wildwood Police Department announced it successfully prevented a planned boardwalk “takeover” over the Independence Day weekend after investigators learned of the event through NJ Transit Police.
According to police, detectives were contacted on Saturday, July 4, after NJ Transit Police alerted them to a social media post advertising an unsanctioned gathering on the Wildwood Boardwalk.
Investigators immediately launched an extensive investigation, working alongside the New Jersey State Police Regional Operations Intelligence Center (ROIC) in an effort to identify the event’s organizer and have the online posts removed.
Police mobilized after social media posts remained online
Authorities said detectives were unable to identify the individual responsible for promoting the event or convince the social media platform to remove the posts advertising the gathering.
With the event still circulating online, Wildwood police increased staffing and deployed officers to the targeted area of the boardwalk to prevent the gathering from taking place.
Business owners in the area also took precautions, removing equipment from storefronts to minimize potential damage if large crowds materialized.
Throughout the evening, officers contacted numerous small groups on the boardwalk and directed them to disperse before they could form into larger crowds, police said.
Suspected organizer arrested on boardwalk
As the investigation progressed, detectives developed information identifying a possible organizer and distributed a photograph of the suspect to officers assigned to the boardwalk.
At approximately 6:08 p.m., members of the department’s bicycle patrol spotted a man matching the description near the 2600 block of the boardwalk.
Police identified the suspect as Stephen Kerrin, 19, of Elkins Park, Pennsylvania.
Kerrin was arrested and charged with Disturbance at a Public Gathering under N.J.S.A. 2C:33-2(d).
He was processed on a summons complaint and released in accordance with New Jersey’s Criminal Justice Reform policies and directives issued by the Attorney General.
The charge is an accusation, and Kerrin is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
Chief praises coordinated law enforcement response
Wildwood Police Chief Joseph Murphy credited the department’s officers and several law enforcement agencies for preventing the event before it could disrupt the busy holiday weekend.
“I could not be prouder of the hard work of our entire department and their continued professional efforts to stop these ‘TAKEOVER’ events from occurring,” Murphy said.
He also thanked the NJ Transit Police, New Jersey State Police, Cape May County Sheriff’s Department, and the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office for assisting with the investigation.
“To those who think they can bring this type of disruptive and unlawful behavior to the City of Wildwood, I assure you we will do everything in our power to identify you and charge you to the full extent of the law,” Murphy said.
The chief also encouraged members of the public to continue reporting information they encounter on social media.
“Due to the vastness of these platforms, the information shared is of significant importance to our investigations,” he said.
Holiday crowds remain a focus for law enforcement
Law enforcement agencies across New Jersey have increasingly monitored social media for unauthorized “pop-up” gatherings and “takeover” events, particularly during holiday weekends when shore communities experience large crowds.
Officials say these events, which are often organized online with little advance notice, can create public safety concerns and require significant police resources to prevent disorderly conduct and property damage.
Wildwood police said their proactive enforcement efforts helped ensure the advertised gathering never materialized on the boardwalk.
