MANHATTAN, N.Y. — A 61-year-old woman was fatally shot in the head Tuesday night in Harlem, while a 23-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the foot in the same incident, according to the NYPD.
Police said the shooting occurred around 10:20 p.m. at the intersection of West 113th Street and Lenox Avenue, within the boundaries of the 28th Precinct. Officers already in the area responded after hearing the sound of gunfire.
Upon arrival, police found the woman outside 65 Lenox Avenue with a gunshot wound to the head. She was rushed by EMS to Mount Sinai Morningside, where she was pronounced dead. Her identity is being withheld pending family notification.
A 23-year-old man was also discovered at the scene with a gunshot wound to the left foot. He was taken to Mount Sinai Morningside in stable condition, authorities said.
Investigators believe the woman may have been an unintended target, though the full circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation.
A person of interest has been taken into custody, according to police, but no charges have been announced as of Wednesday morning.
Police presence intensified at Lenox and 113th
The area around Lenox Avenue remained sealed off for several hours as crime scene investigators collected evidence. Detectives interviewed witnesses and reviewed surveillance footage from nearby buildings.
“The investigation remains ongoing,” the NYPD said in a statement late Tuesday night.
