Wilkes-Barre woman arrested after alleged attempted child abduction on city street

WILKES-BARRE, PA. — A 45-year-old Wilkes-Barre woman was arrested Thursday after allegedly attempting to abduct a 9-year-old child on a city sidewalk, according to the Wilkes-Barre City Police Department.

Christine Searfoss was taken into custody on April 24 following the incident, which occurred just before noon near the intersection of South Pennsylvania Avenue and East Market Street. Police said Searfoss faces charges related to offenses against the family and child.

Mother fights off suspect after attempted abduction

According to authorities, officers responded to the scene at approximately 11:42 a.m. after receiving reports of an attempted child abduction. The child’s mother told officers that Searfoss approached her while she was standing on the sidewalk, making incoherent statements before grabbing the child’s arm and attempting to pull him away.

The mother was able to wrestle her child free and quickly retreated into a nearby building for safety.

Suspect reportedly tried to force entry into building before arrest

Police reported that Searfoss then attempted to gain entry into the same building where the mother and child had taken refuge. Officers arrived shortly after and detained Searfoss without further incident.

The defendant was transported to City Headquarters for processing following the arrest. No injuries to the child were reported.


Investigation continues as suspect remains in custody

Authorities have not released additional details about Searfoss’ background or whether she remains in custody pending charges. The investigation into the attempted abduction remains ongoing.

Police did not disclose if the suspect and the victim’s family had any prior connection.
