Willie Randolph visits Somerset to celebrate Patriots championship season

SOMERSET, NJ – Legendary New York Yankees second baseman Willie Randolph was in Somerset to celebrate the Somerset Patriot’s 2022 championship season. An affiliate of the New York Yankees, a double-a team playing in the Northeast Atlantic League, won the league championship last fall.

Randolph played on the world-champion 1977 Yankees team that included greats such as Ron Guidry, Greg Nettles and Bucky Dent. He was a coach for the Yankees during their 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000 World Series-winning teams. He also played in the 1976 World Series, in which the Yankees lost to the Cincinnati Reds, and in 1981 when the Yankees lost to the Dodgers.

Randolph played most of the 1978 season, but was injured before the season ended. The Yankees went on to beat the Dodgers, but Randolph was not on the roster due to his injury. Instead, Brian Doyle made his legendary post-season run batting .438 at the plate.

He was also a six-time all-star who batted .276 lifetime but was known for his exceptional prowess in the field.

He started his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates and after leaving the Yankees in 1988, he finished out his career with the Dodgers, A’s, Brewers and Mets.
