A teenage shooting victim fought for nearly a month before complications from her injuries turned the case into a homicide investigation
Washington, DC — A 16-year-old girl who survived a shooting in Northwest DC for several weeks has died from complications related to her injuries, prompting authorities to reclassify the case as a homicide.
The victim, identified as Sa’Renitee Wilson of Northwest DC, was among two people shot during an incident in the 5600 block of 13th Street NW on May 19.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded at approximately 12:13 a.m. after receiving reports of a shooting.
When officers arrived, they found an adult woman and a juvenile girl suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Both victims were conscious and breathing when first responders reached the scene.
DC Fire and EMS transported the victims to local hospitals for treatment.
Police said Wilson was taken back to a hospital on June 9 after experiencing complications related to her injuries.
On June 13, she died despite lifesaving efforts.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that Wilson’s death resulted from complications of a gunshot wound and ruled the manner of death a homicide.
The Metropolitan Police Department is continuing to investigate the case.
