20-year-old woman killed in South Capitol Street hit-and-run crash

DC hit-and-run leaves 20-year-old dead and SUV driver on the run

Washington, DC – A 20-year-old woman was struck and killed early Saturday morning when a speeding SUV hit her as she crossed South Capitol Street in Southeast, then fled the scene, police said.

The Metropolitan Police Department identified the victim as Aiyanah Brown of Southeast DC. Officers were called to the 4300 block of South Capitol Street around 3:17 a.m. for reports of a pedestrian crash. When they arrived, they found Brown with severe injuries consistent with being hit by a vehicle. Despite emergency efforts from DC Fire and EMS, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said a 2009 Nissan Rogue was traveling southbound in the opposing lane of traffic at a high rate of speed when it struck Brown, who was attempting to cross outside a crosswalk. The driver fled immediately after the impact. Police later located the vehicle unoccupied nearby.

Detectives from the Major Crash Investigations Unit are leading the case and working to identify the driver responsible for the deadly hit-and-run.

Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact MPD at 202-727-9099 or send an anonymous text to 50411.
