NEW BRUNSWICK – A machete-wielding subject attacked police officers who responded by shooting the man in self-defense and the entire incident was caught on video.

A man brandishing a knife was shot and wounded by police on Route 27 near Mitchell Avenue at around 2 p.m. last Friday, according to authorities.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, which is overseeing the investigation, stated that officers from both the Franklin Township and New Brunswick police departments were dispatched following reports of an ongoing assault involving a knife-wielding man.

Officers on the scene tried to de-escalate the situation. The man, who remains unidentified, lunged at the officers with the knife, prompting one of them to shoot and strike him.

The specific department to which the shooting officer belonged is not yet clear.

As of 6:30 p.m. Friday, the injured man was reported to be in stable condition at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. The investigation continues.
