PHILADELPHIA, PA – District Attorney Larry Krasner and members of the District Attorney’s Office Homicide and Non-Fatal Shootings Unit announced on Monday that a Philadelphia jury of First Degree Murder, Conspiracy, and illegal firearm charges convicted Marquis Mathis. The charges relate to an ambush on Halloween night in 2019, where Mathis and a co-conspirator shot the victim, 31-year-old Craig Carter, 14 times before fleeing the scene.
Investigators recovered ballistic evidence, DNA, and surveillance video linking Mathis and his co-conspirator to the crime. The co-conspirator, Joshua Yelverton, was convicted of Third Degree Murder in August 2021. Mathis, who was on parole during the incident, was arrested in Bethlehem, PA, in October 2020.
“Thanks to the skillful prosecution in this case by Assistant District Attorney Christian Wynne, Mr. Mathis no longer poses a threat to the community,” said DA Krasner. “This conviction and sentencing also send a message to others who contemplate committing such acts.” Mathis was sentenced to life without parole on April 25, 2024, by the Hon. Giovanni Campbell.
