Trenton, NJ – The Senate Commerce Committee endorsed a resolution sponsored by Senator Angela V. McKnight to designate August as “Black Business Month” in New Jersey. Senator McKnight emphasized the vital role of Black businesses in driving economic growth and empowering entrepreneurs to pursue their dreams.
“Black Business Month” has been observed nationally since 2004, focusing on supporting Black business owners. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Black-owned businesses represent 10% of all businesses in the United States, totaling about 2 million companies. This sector has exhibited faster growth compared to overall business expansion in recent years.
The joint resolution, known as SJR-91, passed the committee with a unanimous 5-0 vote. This move aims to acknowledge and celebrate the significant contributions of Black-owned businesses to New Jersey’s culture and economy while promoting economic freedom for Black individuals across the state. The resolution represents a dedicated effort to support and uplift Black entrepreneurs in New Jersey.
