TRENTON, N.J. — The Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA) is investigating a fatal police-involved shooting that occurred on Saturday in the Browns Mills section of Pemberton Township, according to officials.

The identity of the deceased, an adult male, has not been released. Authorities confirmed that a firearm was recovered near the individual.

Under a 2019 New Jersey law (N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2)), the Attorney General’s Office is mandated to investigate any deaths that occur during encounters with law enforcement officers acting in their official capacity or while the individual is in custody. As part of this process, the case will be presented to a grand jury to determine whether criminal charges are warranted against the officer or officers involved.

The investigation remains ongoing, and no additional details are available at this time, officials said.
